Dinah Margaret Jane Crosby

Dinah Margaret Jane Crosby was the fifth child of Mary Ditchburn & Robert Crosby born 1836 at Seaham Harbour & christened December 12th, 1836 at St Andrew’s, Dalton-le-Dale, Co Durham.

At the time of the 1841 census Dinah  (listed as Jane) was living with her mother & brother  Robert at New Cassop where her mother was a publican.  Her father was visiting her aunt Elizabeth Earnshaw (nee Crosby) at Dawdon Hall, Seaham.

In 1851 Dinah, now Margaret in census, & her parents were living  in New Cassop Colliery village where her father was farming.

Dinah Margaret married Robert Jackson, a pitman, on May 2nd, 1853 at St Helen’s, Kelloe, Co Durham.  Witnesses at the wedding were Jacob Jackson & John Allison.  Robert was born 1830 in Washington, Co Durham, the son of Charles Jackson, a pitman.

By 1861 Margaret & Robert had 2 children, Mary (6) & Robert (4) & were living in Trimdon Grange, Co Durham where Robert was a coal miner.

The family were still living in Trimdon Grange in 1871 & the family had grown to include Gibson (9), Charles (5), George (3) & Dinah (1).  Also living with them was Robert’s brother, William Jackson, also a coal miner like Robert.  They also had a servant, Ann Anderson.  Children Mary & Robert were living with their grandparents, Robert & Mary Crosby in Cassop at the time of the census & both described as general servants.

Daughter Mary had married George Smith, a coal miner, in 1875 in Kelloe.

By 1881 the family had moved to Langley Park, Esh & Robert continued to work as a coal miner.  Children at home were Gibson (19), Charles & George, all coal miners, Dinah, Elizabeth (10), Margaret (9), William (6) & Sarah (5), all at school.

In 1887 daughter Dinah married Moses Morland, a coal miner, at Lanchester.

Robert & Margaret were living at 4 Langley St, Langley Park in 1891 & Robert was still a coal miner as were sons Charles & George who were still at home.  Also still at home were Margaret A, William, a grocer’s apprentice, & Sarah J.  Margaret’s widowed father Robert Crosby, a retired farmer, was living with the family, as was daughter Elizabeth & her husband James Johnson, a coal miner.  There was also a 4 year old granddaughter, Margaret I Smith who was born in Esh.

Robert died on August 4th, 1892 at Langley Park & was buried on August 7th at Esh.

In 1894 daughter Sarah Jane married William John Hattam, a coal miner, at Lanchester.  By 1911 William was found as a patient at the Club Union Convalescent Home, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, N. Yorks & noted as being a coal miner & having had 9 children, 7 of whom were living.  Sadly William died later that year.  Sarah Jane & her 7 children were living in Elm St, Langley Park at the time of the census.

In 1901 widowed Margaret was living with son Charles, a coal miner, in Quebec St, Esh.  With them was a boarder, Robert Smith (20), a horse keeper.  Son George had married Elizabeth Smith & by 1901 they were living in Brandon & Byshottles, Co Durham with Elizabeth’s parents, Elizabeth & William Smith.  George was still a coal miner.

Son William, a coal miner, married Sarah Whitley & in 1901 they were also living in Quebec St, Esh with a daughter Olive.  Sadly William was died in 1904 while working at Langley Park Colliery as a (coal) shifter. On October 26th he received a fracture of the skull over his left eye by a winch handle & died 4 days later.

Margaret was living with daughter Margaret Ann & her husband, John Robinson, a miner, & their 3 children in 1911.  They were living in Old Esh Village.
